Zhou and Students Receive SOSP 2005 Best Paper Award

DAIS professor YuanYuan Zhou and her students have won the best paper award at SOSP 2005 for their paper entitled "Rx: Treating Bugs as Allergies, a Safe Method for Surviving Software Failures."
Rx offers a way to partially roll back buggy programs and rerun them in an environment that has been altered to remove the "allergen" that triggered the bug.

Recent DAIS graduate Xiaosong Ma has received the Department of Energy's Early Career Award. Xiaosong is currently a professor at North Carolina
State University with a joint appointment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, working on management of scientific data.

We are pleased to announce the impending graduation of five of our PhD students, who will soon be interviewing for research positions. Please contact us if you are looking for an excellent researcher for your department! The students and their research communities:
- Bin He has been working with Kevin Chang on schema matching for information integration. Bin is the chief architect and a primary system-builder of the Metaquerier project, which has been widely demoed and is now being licensed to outside organizations. You can find Bin's work in CIDR, SIGMOD, VLDB, KDD, CACM, and TODS.
- Zhenmin Li has been working with YuanYuan Zhou on applying data mining to improve software robustness. Zhenmin was one of the two primary authors of an ASPLOS 2004 paper that was featured in IEEE Micro as one of the 14 best papers from architecture conferences that year; you can also find his work in OSDI, FSE, FAST, and ICDCS.
- Feng Qin has been working with YuanYuan Zhou on OS support for building dependable software. His paper on that topic was chosen as one of the best at SOSP05. You can also find his work in HPCA and his joint work in ISCA and Micro.
- Xifeng Yan has been working with Jiawei Han on mining information from graphs, bioinformatics, and software bug mining. Xifeng has two invited papers in TODS and one in the Machine Learning Journal, an honor usually reserved for top papers at top conferences; and his KDD05 paper received the best student paper runner-up award. You can also find Xifeng's work at SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, KDD, SDM, ICDM, PKDD, ISMB, and FSE.
- Pin Zhou has been working with YuanYuan Zhou on hardware support for improving software robustness. You can find her work in ISCA, Micro, and ASPLOS, and two of her papers were featured in IEEE Micro as being among the 14 best papers from architecture conferences in 2004.
